LET’S SEE WHAT OTHERS
HAVE HAD TO SAY...
DEATH DISCO NEW YORK - BP FALLON (KEITH RICHARDS/U2/RONNIE WOOD TOUR DJ)
It was a gas having The Fairies open their American adventure by playing at Death Disco New York, a groove meeting y'all. You rocked our world! What The Fairies do contains a sufficiency of madness entwined around an irreverent sense of fun. With wings on. Sez BP.
DEATH DISCO NEW YORK - BP FALLON (KEITH RICHARDS/U2/RONNIE WOOD TOUR DJ)
11.30pm THE FAIRIES BAND (UK) 4 controversial pop punk girls from London making their American debut, Sparkle and Tinsel, and sisters Twinkle and Tinky sound like a foul mouthed Elastica with a dose of The Slits. Hear them sing Pink Socks Rock with its rousing chorus of 'Lick my Clit!' Appalling, really.
DROWNED IN SOUND
A bunch of London dandies with names such as Twinkle and Tinsel, open this split single with a memorably monickered 'Pink Socks Rock (Fuck My Hole)'. It's an exuberant stop-start, fast-and-loose number that veers back and forth between taut and flailing, full of snappy, tick-tock rhythms and sharp edged guitars. It's kinda reminiscent of Elastica (quirky, rhythmic, that same kinda working to a hey-what-happens-if-we-do-this template) but wilder and more ramshackle. Their second, completely contrasting track 'Colonel Bright' is a rippling acoustic song, far more melodic and gentle than 'Pink Socks...' in its telling of the title character weaving her way home drunk, "her fishnets in shreds". The Fairies Band are equally competent playing melancholy acoustic dities as they are flashing gratuitous obscenity and silliness over ridiculously catchy tunes with a scrambled, good natured energy, though I get the impression they prefer the latter activity.....
SOUNDS XP
The Vichy Government / The Fairies Band EP Three
Launched with the pick of some of the best new talent known to man or beast, this is one of four EPs released at the same time on cracking indie label Filthy Little Angels. The Fairies Band are clearly a potty mouthed bunch. Pink Socks Rule (Fuck My Hole) is a rather rude take on Elastica but more acceptable to these delicate ears is track 2, Colonel Bright which sounds like a darker version of 10000 Maniacs if only because the vocals have a rather pleasant Natalie Merchant-like burr to them.
KITTEN PAINTING – Pink Socks Rock
The Fairies Band: Pink Socks Rock - Tensile guitar strings, ace snappy girl vocals. And a joyful squealing chorus like Elastica being very RUDE indeed. Hell Yeahh!
ROUGH TRADE SHOPS – Pink Socks Rock
The Fairies Band sound like a young and innocent elastica despite one track being called 'pink socks rock (fuck my hole)'
JOYZINE – Pink Socks Rock
Brazen punk-pop that glides along like Elastica picking themselves off the floor after a particularly vicious pub brawl.
ARMCHAIR – Pink Socks Rock
Chugging gumby guitars, shouty vocals. Like early Slits but less all over the place.
BUZZWORDS DEUX – Pink Socks Rock
Pink Socks Rock' by The Fairies Band tends to stick in your mind, with its rousing chorus of "Lick my, lick my clit!". Doubt that'll get on XFM, never mind Radio 1, but who cares
CLAIRE STURGESS - XFM
“...Shouty, funny, poppy, punky fairy rock n roll...”
